Insights & Perspectives: Lessons from Acts 2:1–11 on the Alcohol Recovery Journey

Two powerful lessons from Acts of the Apostles 2:1–11 resonate deeply with the journey of alcohol recovery.

1. God Works Through the Unexpected

“Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.”
Acts 2:2

The arrival of the Holy Spirit was dramatic and unanticipated—wind, fire, and languages no one expected. It reminds us that God often works in ways that defy human logic. We must remain open to His methods, even when they don’t align with our plans.

Recently, I read a chapter from the Big Book titled “Another Chance.” It tells the story of a Black woman in 1930s America who struggled with alcoholism. Despite multiple attempts, AA never seemed to “click” for her. After a tragic accident, she was sentenced to 12 years in prison. It was there—behind bars—that she finally connected with AA and found her God. She was released after just three years and never drank again.

This is a powerful example of how God can work through the most unexpected circumstances. For anyone in recovery, it’s a reminder: you can’t always plan where God will lead you. The key is to surrender and trust Him.

2. Boldness Comes from the Spirit

“All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.”
Acts 2:4

The apostles, once fearful and uncertain, were transformed into bold proclaimers of the gospel. That courage didn’t come from themselves—it came from the Spirit.

In recovery, we too need boldness. It takes courage to face our past, to stay the course, and to speak openly about our journey. That strength comes from deepening our spirituality and placing our trust in God.

I’m proud to say I’ve reached a point in my own recovery where I’ve shed the cloak of anonymity. I now have the courage to write and speak about my journey. If sharing my story helps even one person on their path to healing, it will have been worth it.
