The Trinity Lens: Powerlessness, Surrender, and Inventory & Growth

After thousands of hours immersed in alcohol recovery—through study, reflection, and lived experience—I’ve come to believe that at the heart of recovery lies a simple but profound truth. I’ve always appreciated when difficult concepts are expressed simply. And I believe in the “power of three.”

For me, the three foundational principles of alcohol recovery are:

1. Powerlessness

Accepting that you are powerless over alcohol—and that no amount of willpower, logic, or support from another human being can fix it. Alcohol addiction is cunning, baffling, powerful, and patient. It waits. And it wins when you try to fight it alone.

2. Surrender

No matter how bold, methodical, disciplined, or optimistic your efforts, there comes a point where you must surrender. You stop trying to bend the universe to your will. You turn your will and your life over to the care of God. You accept the things you cannot change, find the courage to change the things you can, and seek the wisdom to know the difference.

3. Inventory & Growth

Through faith, spirituality, meditation, and modern psychological tools, you begin a lifelong journey of self-discovery. You take inventory—not just of your behaviors, but of the root-cause patterns and wounds that alcohol once helped you mask. You take prayer-powered action to heal those weaknesses and build on your strengths. You grow.

The Trinity Lens of Alcohol Recovery maps naturally to the 12 Steps of AA. For me, it’s become a kind of spiritual Swiss Army knife—or maybe more like Dr. Who’s sonic screwdriver: a high-functioning, multi-purpose tool in my sobriety toolbox.
