The Ship’s Captain and the Power of Surrendered Action

In Came to Believe, one of the official Alcoholics Anonymous books, there’s a short but memorable story often referred to as “The Ship’s Captain.” In it, a captain explains that under maritime law—and specifically under Lloyd’s of London insurance standards—he is considered to be operating “under God” when at sea. This phrase beautifully illustrates the principle of surrendering control and trusting a higher power, a central theme in AA’s spiritual framework and the second principle in my lens for viewing the AA steps: The Power of Three Key Principles of Alcohol Recovery.

The story is brief, but its impact is lasting. In AA circles, it’s often used as a metaphor for humility, responsibility, and spiritual alignment—especially in moments of uncertainty or risk. But it also resonates deeply with my belief that while recovering alcoholics must indeed turn their will and lives over to the care of God, they must also take prayer-powered, bold, positive, methodical, incremental, exponential, and disciplined action.

A ship’s captain may be under the care of God, but that doesn’t absolve them of responsibility. They must still make decisions, listen to their crew, navigate, steer the ship, and set the sails. A captain who retreats to the galley and takes no action at all will almost certainly lead both themselves and their crew to ruin.

This story reminds us that surrender is not passive. It’s a posture of trust that fuels courageous, deliberate action. And in recovery—as in life—that’s where transformation happens.
