Step Two – Summary of the Key Principles to Be Practiced
“Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.”
Step Two is the step of possibility. If Step One is the collapse of self-will, Step Two is the first breath of hope. It doesn’t ask for certainty. It doesn’t demand theology. It simply invites you to believe that healing is possible—and that you don’t have to do it alone.
This step is not about defining God. It’s about opening the door. It’s about the willingness to believe that something—anything—greater than your own thinking might help you find your way back to peace, clarity, and sanity.
🔑 Core Principles of Step Two
1. Willingness to Believe
This is the gentle beginning of faith. Not belief in a specific doctrine, but a willingness to believe that something greater than yourself might help. It’s the first crack in the armor of self-reliance. You don’t need to understand it. You don’t need to name it. You just need to be open.
2. A Power Greater Than Ourselves
This principle explores what that Power might be. It’s not about religious dogma—it’s about spiritual elevation. Whether it’s God, the AA fellowship, nature, love, or something else, the key is that it’s not just you anymore. This is where we begin to consider what makes a Higher Power meaningful, forgiving, and emotionally resonant.
3. Restoration to Sanity
Sanity here means clarity, peace, and freedom from the obsessive thinking that fuels addiction. It’s the return to soundness of mind—the ability to live without chaos, shame, or self-deception.
4. Letting Go of Self-Reliance
This principle invites you to stop trying to fix everything on your own. It’s the beginning of trust—trust in others, in the process, and in something greater than your own intellect.
5. Opening to Spiritual Possibility
Step Two is not about religious conversion. It’s about spiritual openness. It’s the moment you say, “Maybe I don’t have to do this alone.” That “maybe” is enough to begin.
